Subject: BA promoting cruelty

Dear Sirs,
We were extremely disappointed to discover a website apparently belonging to
British Airways promoting the Spanish "festival" known as Toro de la Vega.
The link is

This page on the site states:
"If it's the extreme sports you are after, then by all accounts, do not miss
the Toro del Vega on the Tuesday. Participants, either on foot or horseback,
are given a set time in which to spear a maddened bull. It's rare that the
bull survives. So, if you are unable to stomach this then stick solely to
the religious events! It is not uncommon to see the odd participant being
impaled as well as the bull."
In reality, not even the proponents of this event would call it a "sport"
and there is no question of the bull surviving. Instead it suffers a cruel
and lingering death in this medieval and brutal relic that deserves to be
consigned to history.
A more accurate description of this "festival" can be found on our web site:
"Every year in the second week of September a bull is killed with spears and
then his testicles are cut off in honour of the Virgin of la Pena.
This barbarity is allowed by the City Hall of Tordesillas. The bull is
obliged to run in order to cross the bridge meanwhile being persecuted by a
hord of men on horse and foot armed with long spears. As soon as the bull
reaches the other side of the river the bloodbath begins. He is impaled with
these long spears till his death. The author of his death has the right to
remove his testicles and exhibit them on the point of his spear. As a reward
the City Hall gives this criminal a gold badge and a spear of forged iron."
()
Please feel free to quote this description on your site.
We find it incomprehensible that a company as well respected as British
Airways would wish to blatantly publicise such a savage spectacle as the
Toro de la Vega, or the Toro del Alba which you also seem to be giving free
advertising.
We urge you to please remove these shameful plugs without delay.
We look forward to your early response.
Sincerely
Maria Lopes
